Coach Lee Umbles Commemorative Mural at Harlan High School

Created with a team of students from Chicago area high schools for After School Matters with lead artist Tim Hartman in Summer 2011 with clients the Umbles family

It was an honor and a pleasure to work with the Umbles family and After School Matters at the invitation of lead artist and designer Tim Hartman to actualize this mural in commemoration of Coach Umbles' tremendous contribution to the Harlan High School students and teams.  With this mural, we highlight  Harlan as a site of power and success, celebrating the past, supporting the present, and looking to the future.

Adinkra symbols for power, unity, and community co-operation swirl around a trophy haloed by words from Coach Umbles.  "His way" street sign is so christened in reference to the many recollections of Coach Umbles as an old school teacher who instilled respect for self and community.  The winning trophy is featured along with a depiction from an original photograph of Coach Umbles carried aloft after a state championship win.
