The Word Art Series was begun as a daily painting ritual responding to contemporary events and themes, in the spirit of artists throughout art history who have engaged with repeating series. The project served as a way to engage a new form of reflection, a meditative studio practice amidst pandemic and shifting personal, political and global climates, beginning with April Fools Day 2023.
Each original painting is approximately 12 inches x 18 inches on archival drawing paper, painted with a mixture of charcoal and herbal poultice including sage, chamomile, clove, and other materials with healing properties. $222 plus shipping and handling. The Word Art Divination Cards are form of “reading” using this non-traditional form similar to tarot cards and other forms of divination inspired by elemental and spiritual traditions in West Africa. Currently on pre-order here, the deck contains the card series with a booklet containing writings for each card based on short poetic musings that were original presented with the daily posts for each painting on social media.
Join me for the Word Art Divination Portal Lunch-hour Virtual Talk at SFO Museum on October 22, 2026 when I will speak in further depth about African Diasporic traditions in connection with their exhibition One Step Beyond: Fortune-Telling and the Paranormal and will offer a selected live reading for audience members.
